Google marks Léon Foucault's 194th birthday with a doodle

NEW DELHI: Google on Wednesday marked Leon Foucault's 194th birthday with an animated doodle.

Leon Foucault was a French physicist born on September 18, 1819 in Paris and well known for his invention of the Foucault pendulum. His invention demostrated the rotation of the Earth.

Foucault's other major experiment include measurement of the speed of light.

In 1851, Leon Foucault gave his first demonstration on the rotation of the Earth on its axis with the help of a long and heavy pendulum suspended from the roof of the Pantheon in Paris. His experiment created ripples in the world of science.

In 1855, for his remarkable contribution and researches he was awarded the Copley Medal of the Royal Society.

His invention has helped scientist in getting a better understanding of the rotation of the earth.

Leon Foucault died on February 11, 1868 in Paris and was buried in the Cimetiere de Montmartre.

Today Google marks his 194th birthday with an animated doodle that depicts Foucault's Pendulum in the Pantheon, Paris.
