Bikaner: Over 250 Indian Army personnel and a matching number from the Russian Army took part in the Indo-Russian joint army exercise “Indra 2013”, which entered second day on Sunday.
The exercise is joint battle reconnaissance and simulated destruction of an illegal armed forces for future UN operations.
“This is for the first time that a joint exercise is pitched at the combat group level,” defence spokesperson Col S D Goswami said.
The exercise will see a joint Russian-Indian command planning and carrying out an anti-terrorist operation, involving destruction of illegal armed formations. Russian troops will be using Indian military equipment, including T-72 and BMP-2, about 30 units in total, all of them made in Russia.
Col Goswami said the Mahajan field firing range, under control of the South Western Command (Jaipur) headquarters, has a world-class training infrastructure developed during last two to three years and has been utilised for carrying out joint international exercises with friendly foreign countries like Russia, USA, UK, France, Thailand and Kazakhstan.
He said the Indian side will be led by Colonel Rajesh Nambiar, the Combat Group Commander while the visiting Russian contingent will be led by Lt Gen Vladimir G Tzilko.
Earlier, a similar Indo-Russian exercise ‘Indra 2012’ was held from August 7 to 16, 2012, at a military range near Ulan Ude in the Republic of Buryatia, Russian Federation. Since 2003, India and Russia have conducted five ‘Indra’ series of joint military exercises.
