Somdev Devvarman has scripted one of the biggest comeback stories this year. A feat for which he has been nominated Comeback Player of the Year alongside Rafael Nadal, Tommy Robredo and Dmitry Tursunov at this year’s ATP World Tour awards. The 28 year-old, who was in the city, opened up to TOI on a range of topics.
Excerpts:
From being ranked a lowly 656 late last year, you have broken into the top 100 now. Was this a target you set yourself and what is it that you did differently this time around?
Well, the numbers tell it all. It has been tough to work my way up. I’m 28 years old now, and obviously I think I have matured as a player. I had to go that extra distance both in terms of my game and fitness. At the end of the day it’s very satisfying because it was a mental target I had set myself early this year.
Anand Amritraj’s appointment as India’s new Davis Cup non-playing captain has been well-received by the players. What is it that you think a person of his stature brings to the side?
Firstly he shares a great rapport with most of us, so that’s a big plus. Also, his experience is something that will be invaluable. As for the second singles player, honestly I’m not too worried about the pressure on me. There is a relatively large young pool of players who I’m sure we could use in due course of time.
What are your goals for now?
A ranking in the top 50 next year seems like a realistic one for now.
