Eleven dead as US plane crashes at Afghanistan airport
Six US military personnel and five civilians die in accident involving an American C-130 transport plane
An American C-130 transport plane has crashed at Jalalabad airport in Afghanistan, killing six crew members and five civilian contractors, a US militaryspokesman said on Thursday.
“The crew and passengers were killed,” US Army Colonel Brian Tribus said. There were no reports of enemy fire at the time and the incident was under investigation.
The incident took place at about midnight (1930 GMT on Thursday).
The contractors had been working for “Resolute Support,” the NATO-led training mission.
There are about 1,000 coalition forces in eastern Afghanistan, including American and Polish forces as well as about 40,000 Afghan troops, according to Nato.
The US has about 9,800 troops in Afghanistan, where there has been fierce fighting over the northern city of Kunduzafter it was taken by the Taliban in September.
US troop numbers are expected to go down a bit by the end of the year.
