SRINAGAR: The death of a 13-year-old boy from pellet injuriesallegedly sustained during a clash with security forces triggered a fresh wave of protests in Srinagar on Saturday. Junaid Ahmad Akhoon's death took the toll for Kashmir's three-month spell of unrest to 91.
Saidapora resident Akhoon allegedly sustained pellet injuries to the head and chest while pelting stones on security forces during a clash after Friday afternoon prayers. However, a report by news agency PTI quoted locals as alleging that the boy was not involved in any protest.
PDP general secretary Nizamuddin Bhat has demanded a probe into the boy's death, an IANS report added.
Junaid Ahmad Akhoon of Saidapora in Eidgah, downtown Srinagar, was hit by pellets in his head and chest while pelting stones on security forces after Friday afternoon prayers, reports said. He was immediately rushed to a hospital by the residents of his locality but he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday morning, sources said.
After Akhoon's death on Saturday morning, his death triggered massive protests in the downtown. Protesters took his body to the "martyrs' graveyard" by Eidgah. Police fired several tear gas shells to disperse the protesters who raised pro-freedom and anti-India slogans while carrying the corpse. Curfew was subsequently imposed in Srinagar's downtown areas.
Two youth, Moomin of Aanchar area in Soura and Hilal Ahmad have been hit by tear gas shells during the protests since Friday, reports said. Schools, colleges, shops and business establishments in the valley remained closed on Saturday, continuing a trend in place, with sporadic relief, since the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani on July 8.
